“Look, I know it may sound funny coming from me,” said Hylan the next time we met and I told him what was coming down. “But Bishop loves you in his own way. And right now, till I get my own shit in order, he’s all you got when it comes to a roof over your head and food in your mouth…”

“I can move in with you. We can be together—”

“And live off my shitty little disability check? Stud, that’s all we got. If that could work, I would have told you to leave him a long time ago. If this city gets any more expensive, I’ll be eating Bosco’s food soon.”

“Doin’ what, cleaning toilets for five bucks an hour? Without a high school diploma, you can’t even work at McDonald’s.”

I also found out from one of Bishop’s blabbermouth dinner party friends I ran into at Macy’s a week later that Mildred’s house and all of her assets were in Bishop’s name. She had signed it all over to her boy in case she ever needed to go into a nursing home. That way, it would look like she had nothing and would automatically go on Medicaid.

So that’s what Bishop had meant when he said it wasn’t up to her about me tagging along.

Mildred was pushing eighty, had heart problems, and was coughing her lungs out, so who knows how long she had?

“Listen to your elders,” said Hylan, who was all of five years older than me, “be patient, be smart. Once Momma goes bye-bye, who knows? You— We might be able to work something out with Bishop so we can be together but he still has you in his life.”

“You mean support us?” I asked, wondering if he had just smoked some of that grass we had on New Year’s.

“I wouldn’t put it like that, but if he wants you around as much as you say he does, he might help us out. Why risk losing you?”

Yep, Hylan was sure as hell smarter than me.
